How to Practice Wedding Etiquette

Attending a wedding isn't as simple as showing up and having a good time. There are several things you need to know when you attend a wedding. Wedding guests have responsibilities when it comes to behavior. You don't want to be that one guest that is remembered forever.

Instructions

  1. Pick up your seating card from the table near the entrance to the reception hall. Move to the correct table. Don't try to change tables with someone else. There's a reason the bride and groom put you where they did.
  2. Know that some wedding receptions will have your seating card already at a place setting. In this case, sit in the assigned seat. Again, don't try to switch places with another wedding guest.
  3. Look over your place setting. At upscale weddings, there will be an extra fork and spoon over your plate. These are for coffee and dessert.
  4. Read over the menu card if there is one. This will tell you exactly what you'll be eating at the wedding. It will correspond with the silverware at your place setting.
  5. Introduce yourself to the other people at your table. Chances are good you haven't met them all. Talk about your relationship to the couple as an ice breaker.
  6. Pay attention during speeches and toasts. It's rude to talk during them.
  7. Keep your drinking under control. There's nothing worse than a drunk and loud wedding guest.
